OUR CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE!

Image
The so-called  "Black American . . . has . . . a strong, hereditary cultural unity, born of slavery, of common suffering, prolonged proscription and curtailment of political and civil rights; and especially because of economic and social disabilities. Largely from this fact, have arisen the cultural gifts to America—their rhythm, music and folk-song; their religious faith and customs; their contribution to American art and literature; their defense of their country in every war, on land, sea and in the air; and especially the hard, continuous toil upon which the prosperity and wealth of this continent has largely been built. . . . OUR CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE! Demand that Sophie B. Wright School end the overly harsh punishment of Black students | OrganizeFor : Around 30 students were given 5-day suspensions from Sophie B. How to Delete the Contacts That Facebook Uploaded Without Your Permission

Image
Facebook’s public image has been taking a beating lately, and things just keep getting worse for the social media platform. According to a recent report from Business Insider India, Facebook has been uploading info from its users’ email contacts since 2016. Facebook did this “unintentionally” and without warning when users created their accounts for the first time, or when using their email accounts for login confirmation.

Strategic Volunteering to Build Your Career

Image
How do I get experience if no one will hire me? Strategic volunteering is the act of intentionally seeking to volunteer in areas you want to improve or grow. If you want to work on your email marketing, volunteer to take on the PTA newsletter. If you want to be a better baker, manage the bake sale at school. If you want to work on your public speaking, be the president of a group at church. For me personally, volunteering helped me start my business and even secure my business partner.

Morehouse Takes One Step Forward And One Step Back On Its Transgender Student Policy

Image
Transgender men will be allowed to enroll in the school for the first time in 2020, but some are calling the new policy exclusionary and hostile. The policy also states that Morehouse “will continue to use masculine pronouns” which it calls “the language of brotherhood.” But the iconic college is calling the new policy an important step towards an inclusive campus

Tell the EPA: Save the Clean Water Rule

Image
Tell the EPA: Abandon the Dirty Water Rule and protect our waterways and streams. Click the link below to sign the petition : Republicans in Washington may not care much about the environment, but you would think that anyone would want to protect their own drinking water. But apparently for Andrew Wheeler, Trump's EPA chief, helping polluters profit is a higher priority. Wheeler wants to get rid of a rule that helps protect the drinking water for 117 million Americans.1 Under his leadership, the EPA published a proposal to replace the Obama-era Clean Water Rule with the aptly named Dirty Water Rule, a far weaker alternative. Trump's EPA wants to get rid of a rule that helps protect the drinking water for 117 million Americans. Sign the petition to support the Clean Water Rule.

Tweet at Congress: Repeal Trump's hateful Muslim ban now.

Image
Tweet at Congress: Repeal Trump's hateful Muslim ban now : Rep. Judy Chu and Sen. Chris Coons just introduced the NO BAN Act in both chambers of Congress. This bill would strengthen court challenges in repealing Trump's racist Muslim Ban and ensure that the government could never enforce anything like it again.1 It's now on Congress to take bold moral leadership to disrupt Trump's white nationalist agenda and protect Muslim communities. Donald Trump began separating and terrorizing Black and Brown families as soon as he took office. His Muslim ban was one of the first racist policies he enacted to attack our communities. The NO BAN Act would send a message to this administration that no family should ever be torn apart because of their religion or place of birth. We need every member of Congress to support the NO BAN Act and repeal the Muslim ban now. Will you contact your representative and ask them to do the right thing? Repeal Trump's racist Muslim ban now. ...

Jojo Siwa's Sweet 16

Image
Jojo Siwa celebrated her Sweet 16 Tuesday evening the only way she knew how: with a wildly age-inappropriate birthday party built of Nickelodeon nightmares at the W Hotel in Hollywood. (For what it’s worth, she doesn’t actually turn the big one until next month, but who cares? This is her rainbow-filled, shimmery, bow-adorned pseudo-reality, we’re just living adjacent to it.) To celebrate her ability to drive the hideous car her parents gifted her for Christmas (the same one Justin Bieber insulted), Siwa went all out with her outfit, substituting her normally subdued bedazzled clothing for head-to-toe sequins, exaggerated shoulders (more room for more sequins), an A-line pom-pom skirt that might as well have been pulled, strand by strand, from the mane of a My Little Pony, and a big, bright blue (of course, sequined) bow.

California Action Alert: Help keep parents out of prison!

Image
10 million.  That’s how many kids have lost a parent to incarceration at some point in their childhood. When we put a parent in jail or prison, their child suffers. And  children of color suffer more than any other group  – according to a recent study, black children are nine times more likely than white children to have a parent in prison, and Latin children are three times more likely to have an incarcerated parent than their white counterparts. Trauma caused by losing a parent to prison follows a child for the rest of their life, often manifesting in mental health and behavioral challenges that can create an intergenerational cycle of trauma and incarceration.  Children with incarcerated parents are at least three times more likely to go to prison themselves.  Will you join Ashleigh and Asia by telling lawmakers you support the bill? We need your help. Join us in supporting California’s SB 394

Of the millions of people worldwide who unite and wear jeans with a purpose, we each have our own individual story of why we choose to take a stand in support of survivors and against destructive attitudes surrounding sexual assault. We wear denim for ourselves, in honor of someone we love, for future generations, and for our communities. We all share the same goal: to end sexual violence and to disrupt rape culture. Every story and every intention has been a part of building this 20 years strong Denim Day movement. We asked Denim Day participants from across the world why they wear denim and here is my story... How to be an activist for causes you believe in

Image
How to be an activist for causes you believe in  “Activism” officially peaked as a buzzword this year, for good reason. But did you know that millennial men are 15 percent more likely to call themselves activists than millennial women are? What makes this baffling: 74 percent of nonprofits are led by women, so there is no shortage of activist role models out there for women and girls. So, if you need a few reminders on how to get started as an activist, or need a refresher course on how to become even better at it, no fear: We’ve turned to the experts who gathered at the She’s the First Summit to get their

Why It's Important to Think About Your Career in High School

Image
Why It's Important to Think About Your Career in High School : CONSIDERING HOW competitive the job market has become, it’s never too early to start to think about your career. “What are you going to do when you grow up?” is a common question, even for elementary school children, but today, high schoolers are reportedly planning ahead and seeking internships to help them get into college and land job opportunities down the road. Millennial Branding, a Gen Y research and consulting firm, and Internships.com, the world’s largest internship marketplace, announced a new study, “High School Careers,” which surveyed 4,769 students (172 high school students and 4,597 college students) and 326 employers from across the

How the burrito conquered America | Teen Kids News

Image
How the burrito conquered America | Teen Kids News : There's almost no corner of the United States where you can't find a burrito. It's perhaps the most recognizable staple of Mexican-American cuisine. Chipotle's runaway success was founded on the burrito. That makes it even stranger that the burrito was one of the last Mexican foods to catch on in the United States. So how did the burrito gain such widespread popularity in the first place? I asked Gustavo Arellano, author of Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America and renowned expert in burrito data-science circles. His book is a rollicking tour through the unique hybrid cuisine we call 'Mexican food,' from bar-food tamales to grocery store salsa.
