When we put a parent in jail or prison, their child suffers. And children of color suffer more than any other group – according to a recent study, black children are nine times more likely than white children to have a parent in prison, and Latin children are three times more likely to have an incarcerated parent than their white counterparts.
Trauma caused by losing a parent to prison follows a child for the rest of their life, often manifesting in mental health and behavioral challenges that can create an intergenerational cycle of trauma and incarceration.
