'What’s a real man?'

Image
Be kind, gentle, and caring. The feminine side is caring, loving, and nurturing, not destructive and hateful. Always smile, carry a bright outlook, and live today as if it's your last. In the days since Martin left the Dolphins’ training complex in disgust over what he said was continuous and over-the-top hazing by Incognito and others, America has found itself in a debate over the definition of modern manhood, pitting the primacy of old warrior codes against evolving social expectations around bullying and cruel joshing. As the NFL probes the Dolphins’ locker room culture and, more broadly, the league’s views on hazing, the incident has reverberated across the country, at a time when basketball, European soccer, and now American football have become embroiled in controversies around cultural, racial, and gender sensitivities. Many have rushed to Incognito’s defense, blaming Martin for failing to resolve the matter inside the locker room, and for not just punch...

Join us in celebrating the freedom to marry in Hawaii

Image
Coming right after thrilling wins in Illinois and New Jersey, our Hawaii triumph really underscores how far we’ve come in. Because millions of Americans have evolved into a national majority for marriage. Today, Hawaii's leaders have joined them by opening their hearts and changing their minds, writing this latest chapter in America's history of liberty and justice for all. We still have a lot to do to finish the job. But as shown by the hard-fought, long-sought win in Hawaii and our other recent victories, when we work together, we get it done.

Gender identity hate crimes in the U.S.--- All time high

Image
The 18-year-old victim, Luke Fleischman, who was born male but identifies himself as gender neutral and goes by the name of Sasha, remained hospitalized in San Francisco with severe burns on Thursday and was listed in stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. The SF Gate has reported that on November 7, 2013 an Oakland, CA boy has begun surgery to repair second and third degree burns he suffered after being set on fire at his high school this past Monday. Richard Thomas was charged with aggravated mayhem, felony assault and a hate-crime "enhancement" after telling a police officer he committed Monday's attack "because he was homophobic," according to the criminal complaint. Thomas stood in a glass cage in Superior Court out of view of observers and told Judge Gregory Syren that his relatives were trying to hire a lawyer to defend him against the charges. Outside the courtroom, Thomas's mother, who gave her name only as Ms. Jackson, ...

Foods You Should Not Feed Your Dog

Image
Some foods which are edible for humans, and even other species of animals, can pose hazards for dogs because of their different metabolism. Some may cause only mild digestive upsets, whereas, others can cause severe illness, and even death. The following common food items should not be fed (intentionally or unintentionally) to dogs. This list is, of course, incomplete because we can not possibly list everything your dog should not eat. Read more

Cooking with Kids: Healthy and Fun!

Image
Bringing kids into the kitchen to help prepare food is a natural way to introduce a conversation about healthy food choices. With 1 in 3 American children overweight or obese, learning to eat healthier is more important than ever. Being overweight or obese puts children at risk for future diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer. Teaching kids to eat healthfully starts with smart shopping. Fortunately, supermarkets are recognizing Americans’ interest in healthy eating, and there are plenty of healthy—and good-tasting—foods in almost every aisle of your favorite market. Getting the kids involved in navigating the store aisles to find the healthy stuff can not only be fun, it will help them to develop healthy eating patterns for life. Go for variety. Buying the fruit and vegetables your children like assures that they’ll eat plenty of them but what about trying the ones they’ve never even heard of? How about jicama, papaya, tomatillos, mango or even artichokes? It’s...

Why Lung Cancer Strikes Nonsmokers

Image
Most people know that smoking causes cancer, but may not realize how many nonsmokers get lung cancer, too. Every year, about 16,000 to 24,000 Americans die of lung cancer, even though they have never smoked. In fact, if lung cancer in nonsmokers had its own separate category, it would rank among the top 10 fatal cancers in the United States. Read more

Autistic Twin Runners Make Strides at 2013 New York City Marathon

Image
As runners are striding the 26.2 miles from Staten Island to Central Park for the 43rd annual New York City Marathon today, one family waiting at the finish line couldn’t be prouder of what their two sons are accomplishing. Identical twins Alex and Jamie Schneider , both 23, are severely autistic, but running has given them joy and relief from the frustrations of not being able to communicate. “[Alex ] is born to run. I have to cheat on the off-days when we don’t run together,” his running coach, Kevin McDermott, told ABC News. “I’ll sneak in four or five miles just so I can stay in good enough shape [to keep up with him].”  For Jamie Schneider, who runs with his dad, hitting the pavement is about the experience. Both boys have to run with the assistance of a guide, but when it comes to running styles, the twins approach the sport differently. “Jamie is so sensitive,” Allan Schneider said, “even if he sees you frowning on the phone, or someone frowns in the room, he p...

Do you think schools should punish students if they’re behaving badly and talking about it on social media?

Image
One private company estimates it will be monitoring students’ tweets in over 3,000 schools by year’s end. Schools find themselves in a particularly precarious position: If they overreach, they can get slapped down. If they don’t monitor social media, they may be plagued by “What ifs”? In 2011, a court ruled that school officials violated the Constitution when they punished students for posting selfies that featured “lollipops shaped like phalluses.” The suicide of Rebecca Sedwick, a 12-year old who killed herself after enduring a particularly brutal and lengthy assault of online bullying, prompted the arrest of two of her alleged tormenters. But the police action was too late to stop Sedwick's suicide. As a parent of two young boys, I am more than a little wary about cyberbullying . Personally, I can sleep a little better if there are companies like Geo Listening keeping an eye out for warning signs. And I will put up with my boys being pulled into the principal’s ...
