Climate Science Belongs in the Classroom

Image
It seems like such a simple question: How hot is Earth going to get? Yet for 40 years, climate scientists have repeated the same unsatisfying answer: If humans double atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) from preindustrial levels, the planet will eventually warm between 1.5°C and 4.5°C—a temperature range that encompasses everything from a merely troubling rise to a catastrophic one. In recent years, another uncertainty in the climate future has also narrowed: Global emissions seem unlikely to reach the worst-case scenarios IPCC helped craft 15 years ago, ruling out some forecasts of extreme warming. “We’re light-years ahead of where we were in 1979,” says Reto Knutti, a co-author and climate scientist at ETH Zurich. Unfortunately, the years of work needed to attain that certainty came with a cost: 4 decades of additional emissions and global warming, unabated. Should the NYT’s 1619 Project Be Taught in Schools? I say Yes!

Image
School districts in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Buffalo, New York, have decided to update their history curricula to include the material, which posits that the institution of slavery was so embedded in the country's DNA that the country's true founding could be said to have occurred in 1619, rather than in 1776.

How to Keep your Children Safe Online

Image
Talk to your kids about the importance of protecting their privacy Make sure your kids know that it's not safe to share personal information online. Specify the information that they can't share: their full name, address, telephone number, email, photos, and school name. If they're on sites where they're communicating with other users, teach them not to respond to hurtful messages, make plans to get together with someone offline, or open emails from people they don't know. Explain how the safety rules in the real world are the same in the virtual world. The caution used with strangers in person should match the caution kids use with strangers on the internet. If there's a situation where they feel like they should share personal information of any kind, make sure they know to always ask you first. Make sure your kids separate the internet from reality If you're on the fence about the time your kids spend on the net, check out----  How to Keep yo...

The Health Effects of Vaping on Teens

Image
What kids vape now Just as parents and teachers could tell the difference between Juul and a flash drive, a new crop of flavored vapes hit the shelves, and these might be even easier to hide. Why? Because they're disposable. That’s right, the tobacco industry has replaced their $40 iPhone of e-cigs, with a $10 vape kids can toss in the trash. (Sorry landfill.) Like Juul, many of these disposable vapes use nicotine salts, high-potency nicotine designed to absorb more quickly. Which should worry you. Because nicotine, in addition to addicting kids, can increase their anxiety, irritability, mood swings, and learning difficulties. Trending brands of disposable vapes to watch for: Puff Bar, Posh, Stig, Mojo, and Twst. Some of their kid-friendly flavors: Blue Raz, Frosted Apple, Mango, Lemon Dessert, Cherry Bomb.

Your vote is your power

Image
Happy Black History Month! One thing I love about our community is that we’re not afraid to use our voices and fight for what we believe in no matter what. African Americans have been in this country for over 400 years. We've helped build this nation. Today we continue the fight for equality and justice in every facet of our lives from the TV screen to the ballot box. This is OUR country, and as we head into the most critical elections of our lifetime this fall, I can’t think of a more powerful way to use our collective voices than to vote on November 3, 2020. Here’s the thing: Your vote is your power, your vote is your voice, and you deserve to be heard. I'M READY TO LEAD So join us! The elections in November will seriously be here before we know it. It’s time to get involved now, to step up and be a leader in your community. We’ll get you trained and ready to start helping everyone you know register and get out to vote.

African American History Month for Teens

Image
February marks Black History Month, a tribute to African American men and women who have made significant contributions to America and the rest of the world in the fields of science, politics, law, sports, the arts, entertainment, and many other fields. While Black History Month is synonymous with prominent figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. , Harriet Tubman , Rosa Parks , Muhammad Ali , Jackie Robinson , Langston Hughes , Maya Angelou , George Washington Carver and Barack Obama , there are countless other African Americans who've made a profound impact in history: self-made millionaire Madam C.J. Walker , astronaut Mae C. Jemison , open-heart surgeon Daniel Hale Williams , inventor Garret Morgan , media mogul Oprah Winfrey and "Father of Black History" Carter G. Woodson , who lobbied extensively to establish Black History Month as a nationwide celebration, among many others. Explore biographies, videos and articles that celebrate their historic achievements.  Fol...
