Halloween Safety

Make sure all the Trick Or Treaters and their escorts have flashlights. Flashlights will help you see better and to be more visible to cars and others. Make sure you have fresh batteries. Flashlights will help you see items in your path when walking on the sidewalk. Flashlights will help in locating items if you drop them. Other great alternatives to flashlights are glow-sticks and reflective tape on costumes and trick or treat bags. Carry cell phones so you can call home if needed. Teach children their home phone number and how to call 9-1-1 if they have an emergency or become lost. Remind them that 9-1-1 can be dialed free from any phone.

Safety is a shared responsibility, not only for the kids to make sure they don’t run out onto the roadway but also for adults and drivers.  Tonight we have to be more vigilant because a lot more pedestrians will be out and about, especially young kids. Parents need to make sure their kids costume fits well so they don’t trip. If they are wearing a mask, parents need to make sure their child can see well. Police say kids should only go to homes that are well lit, only eat candy that is factory-wrapped and don’t go trick or treating alone. They should also walk on the sidewalks and use crosswalks wherever possible.

Stay in familiar neighborhoods. Only go to houses that have the outside lights on. Do NOT enter homes or apartments unless you are accompanied by an adult. Stay in well lighted areas. Don't cut through back alleys and fields. Stay in populated places and don't go off the beaten track. Trick Or Treaters should stay together as a group if going out without an adult. Stay away from and don't pet animals that you don't know.

Hey Parents! police will also be out making sure adults that are celebrating Halloween do so in a safe manner. It’s crucial that anyone who is drinking don’t drive. Make sure you have a safe ride home and enjoy the holiday responsibly, and those who are hosting a party, make sure your guests have a safe ride home as well. Team work makes the Dream work!
