The state of Mississippi has finally officially ratified the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery by taking the final step of submitting its papers to the National Archives's Office of the Federal Register.
When, back in 1995, the state voted unanimously to pass the amendment abolishing slavery in the US, it did not complete the procedure by notifying the U.S. Archivist about the ratification, so the ratification was never official. Thus, Mississippi became the last state to ratify the 13th Amendment, bringing to an end, in an embarrassingly belated manner, a chapter in US history.
